9 reasons to choose a winter wedding

Whilst we all think of summer as being ‘wedding season’, winter weddings are an increasingly popular choice. In fact, the period between Christmas and New Year is in such demand for weddings its now often booked up years in advance!

There are so many things about a winter wedding that make it very special- here’s 9 reasons you should consider a winter wedding!

1. Walking in a Winter Wonderland

When you think of a winter wedding- and particularly of a Christmas wedding- you’re thinking snow! There is something absolutely magical about having snow on the ground for your wedding day. However you have to be practical- bring spare shoes and something warm to wear over your dress in order to capture those winter wonderland photographs without catching cold!

2. Winter Wedding Colours

Winter weddings are a great excuse to opt for a rich, jewel colour scheme. Reds, gold, oranges, dark greens and navy all work particularly well for a winter wedding colour scheme. Add lots of luxurious textures- fake fur, velvets and silks – for a truly opulent celebration!

3. Stretch the budget

Avoid the Christmas/ New Year period, and a winter wedding is usually more affordable than its summer alternative. Dates in January, February and March will give you a lot more bang for your buck, with discounts on venue hire for example of up to 30%. It’s not just wedding venues- accommodation for your guests will usually be cheaper, and suppliers such as florists often have special offers on too.

4. More Availability

Winter is usually considered to be low or mid season for wedding suppliers, and whilst some use the time to catch up on holidays or branch out into other things, you are much more likely to be able to secure your favourite suppliers during winter. This is especially true of wedding venues, which can book key summer dates up to 3 years ahead! If you have a particular venue, photographer or band in mind, you’ll find they have more available dates to choose from during the winter wedding season.

5. Festive Spirit

Everyone’s ready for a party in winter! Choose a November or December wedding date, and capture everyone whilst they’re busy getting into the festive mood;  or opt for a New Year wedding in January or February, which gives everyone something to look forward to after the excitement of Christmas has passed. Your guests will thank you for choosing a winter wedding!

6. Avoid wedding fatigue

As wedding season is usually considered to be the summer, and these are also the months of summer holidays, sports tournaments and exams, there is always something going on during summer! That means a summer wedding risks not only having some of your invitees unable to attend, but the ones that can will be a little worn out! A winter wedding invite is less likely to clash with other events and people will be more likely to be there for your big day.

7. Romance and candlelight

It sounds obvious, but in the UK in winter, sunset can be as early as 3pm- so the dark and cosy nights are a perfect excuse to bring out the mood lighting! Whether it’s candlelight, uplighters, lanterns or fairylights, mood lighting really helps get everyone in the party spirit and ready for a night of celebrating. Add in roaring fires and you have the perfect winter party setting.

8. Go out with a bang

Fireworks are increasingly popular at weddings- and they are so much better in winter! Summer fireworks have to wait for the sun to set, so they can spoil the party by coming in the middle of the dancing. Have a winter wedding, and you can enjoy fireworks after dinner, then go back inside to the warmth to boogie on down.

9. Make your honeymoon even sweeter

What could be better after a winter wedding than a honeymoon somewhere warm and romantic? A winter sun holiday is perfect for a honeymoon; perhaps the Caribbean or the Maldives, both at their best in winter?

Wherever you choose, opting to honeymoon outside the school holidays will make your budget go further- in this case, quite literally!

Winter weddings can be a really elegant and canny choice- you have much more choice of suppliers and can really make your wedding day stand out from the crowd by opting for a winter wedding day.

So what are you waiting for? Get planning!
